Riffe to serve as 2023 Bluff Park Art Show Judge

HOOVER, Al – The Bluff Park Art Association is pleased to announce artist Debra Riffe as our judge for the 60th annual Bluff Park Art Show on October 7, 2023, at the Bluff Park Community Park.

Riffe is a native of Tupelo, Mississippi, and grew up in Washington, DC. where she earned her BFA from Howard University, College of Fine Arts.

Riffe, a narrative artist, tells stories of African Americans in everyday moments, illuminating themes of

social justice, music, civil rights, illiteracy, and food inequality. She illustrates her love of southern culture

in hand-pulled relief prints of woodcuts, linoleum block prints, and needlepoint tapestries.

I'm very proud of the recognition and honor of being selected to judge the 2023 Bluf Park Art Show. This

is a step, in my decades-long professional artistic career that I hadn't pursued or considered,” Riffe said.

“The Bluf Park Art Show has reimagined its place in the art community, specifically, and in the larger

community of Birmingham. The journey to reach this 60th Anniversary milestone has been impactful.

Thoughtful conversations, I believe, have shaped the Bluf Park Art Show into a model venue. I am

certain that the accomplishments of the Bluf Park Art Association over the next 60 years will continue to

create new opportunities for all artists.”

Riffe is no stranger to the Bluff Park Art Show, winning the Best in Show Permanent Collection award in

2012 and 2019. “The Bluf Park Art Show was the very first art show I applied to in my early years, and I

received an invitation. I've participated in juried art festivals, across the region and the state, for 20-plus

years, but the thrill of being selected as an artist for the Bluf Park Art Show is a feeling that has never

been surpassed.” “There's a threshold of quality that has to be met. It's that standard that I look for in

opportunities and competitions.”
